🌟 Introduction: Kicking Off Your Global Lure Fishing Adventure

Whether you are in North America pursuing Bass and Pike, challenging Trout in Europe, or enjoying Giant Snakehead and Grouper in Southeast Asia, choosing the right tools is the first step toward success. So, today we're going to discuss how novice lure anglers should choose their rods, reels, lines, and lures.

Lure Rods and Reels: The Golden Pair

When selecting lure rods and reels, the most crucial considerations for beginners are forgiveness and user experience.

1-The Two Main Types of Lure Rods

Lure rods are mainly divided into two types: the Spinning Rod and the Casting Rod. The main difference is the presence of a Trigger on the casting rod.

  • Spinning Rods pair with a Spinning Reel.
  • Casting Rods pair with a Baitcasting Reel.

2-Beginner's Choice: Why We Recommend Spinning Reels?

I personally strongly recommend beginners start with a Spinning Reel. The reason is simple: spinning reels have high forgiveness and are less prone to tangling (backlash). If you start lure fishing with a baitcasting reel and frequently experience backlash without catching fish, it might directly lead to frustration and discouragement. To maximize the fishing experience, I recommend starting with an UL (Ultra-Light) spinning rod paired with a reliable spinning reel.

We recommend choosing an UL spinning rod (e.g., a 1.68m UL action rod), paired with a 1000S model spinning reel.

Tips for Selecting Line, Leader, and Tippet

The choice of your lure line system directly impacts casting distance, bite detection, and fishing efficiency.

1-Main Line: PE and Fluorocarbon

We mainly use two types of main lines: PE Line (Braided Line) and Fluorocarbon Line.

  • PE Line (Braided Line): It is recommended to choose a #0.6 PE line. Please avoid using lines gifted by sellers; they often have inaccurate diameters and will severely affect your casting distance. Opting for a high-quality 8-strand braided PE line will provide better strength and smoothness.
  • The line setup is crucial for both spinning and baitcasting reels. REeffun also has an excellent series of lure line products that offer precise diameters and reliable breaking strength, making them an ideal choice when upgrading your gear.

2-Leader and Tippet: The Secret Weapons for Micro Lure Fishing

Fluorocarbon line is often used as a Leader or Tippet. This is an important small tip!

  • Function: When micro-lure fishing, the Leader is a tool to prevent the main line and tippet from tangling. PE line is soft; if connected directly to the lure (like a fly hook), it tangles easily (one tangle every five casts). A fluorocarbon leader with a certain stiffness and elasticity can effectively prevent this issue.
  • Line Diameter Pairing: It is recommended to use #1.2 for the tippet (about twice the main line diameter), and #1.75 for the leader (0.5 size larger than the tippet).

Lures and Lure Rigs

Lure selection is vast, but for beginners, starting with options that are easy to use and have a high catch rate is best.

1-Common Lure Types

  • Fly Hooks: Often used for micro-lure fishing, targeting species like small Trout in North America/Europe or Dace and Striped Fish in Asia. When using fly hooks, a slow-sinking or floating casting aid (e.g., a jig head) is usually needed, and the tippet must be left long to prevent scaring the fish away.
  • Jig Heads: Paired with a Curltail Soft Bait is a universal combination. For instance, a 3.5g jig head paired with a 3.5cm grub can handle various small to medium predatory fish, such as Perch in Europe or Golden Perch in Australia.
  • Small Worm/Carolina Rig: In some freshwater environments (e.g., teasing Tilapia or small topmouth culter), the Carolina Rig paired with a small worm is highly effective.

2-Lure Hooking Example

Whether it’s a jig head or a soft bait, correct hooking is essential.

[Hooking Steps]:

  • Secure the jig head/small worm.
  • The tippet (#1.2 fluorocarbon) is connected to a Swivel.
  • The swivel connects to the leader (#1.75 fluorocarbon).
  • The leader connects to the PE main line.

Common Mistakes and Sharing

1-Common Misconceptions

Many beginners think the more expensive the gear, the better, or they immediately pursue the challenging baitcasting reel. But the best gear is the one that is appropriate for your current skill level. Starting with micro-lure fishing offers a high success rate and is less likely to result in skunking (not catching anything), quickly building enjoyment and confidence.

2-Summary of Beginner Gear Recommendations

Gear Type Recommended Specs Target Pairing / Purpose
Rod UL spinning rod (1.65 m) Maximum sensitivity; ideal for ultra-light finesse fishing
Reel 1000S spinning reel Very forgiving, low risk of line trouble
Main Line PE 0.6 high-quality braided line Long casting distance, excellent sensitivity
Leader Fluorocarbon 1.75 Anti-tangle with good stretch and abrasion resistance
Lure 3.5 g jig head + grub tail Versatile combo with a high strike rate

Whether it is spinning reels, UL lure rods, or various lures, REeffun also has an excellent series of products, dedicated to providing anglers with cost-effective and high-performance fishing tackle to help you easily start your luring journey.
