For anglers new to lure fishing, do you feel overwhelmed by the dazzling array of artificial baits? Don't worry, I (REeffun) am here to help you focus on the essentials! The most common mistake beginners make is getting fooled by those flashy, cheap lure kits. Most baits in beginner sets are of very poor quality, and you'll often end up throwing them away, wasting money.

1. 🎯 Three Core Principles for Beginner Lure Selection

Keep in mind that different fish have different habits and may prefer different lures. But as a beginner, let's focus on the following three aspects to avoid pitfalls:

1.1. Versatility

Choose lures that can catch a wider variety of fish species. If many fish are interested in the same lure, doesn't that greatly increase your chances of getting a bite?

 Common Target Species

  •  North America: Largemouth Bass, Smallmouth Bass, Pike, Walleye, Trout
  •  Europe: Pike, Zander, Perch, Wels Catfish
  •  Australia: Murray Cod, Barramundi, Australian Bass
  •  Southeast Asia: Snakehead, Barramundi

1.2. Ease of Use

  • No complex techniques required. Even with just a steady retrieve, the lure should display an appealing swimming action.
  • Swimming action is how the lure moves underwater. The more realistic and fish-like the action, the more predatory fish will be inclined to strike.

1.3. Value for Money

  • When beginners start lure fishing, casting accuracy and lure control are often unrefined. The chances of getting snagged on trees, grass, or underwater structure are very high, leading to rapid lure loss.
  • Therefore, we need lures that are both effective and affordable!

2. 🎁 Top 3 Must-Have Lures for Beginners

What lures are both effective and affordable? The following three are universally recognized by anglers worldwide as beginner-friendly and highly versatile:

2.1. Spoon Lure / Spinner

The spoon lure (or spinner) is an incredibly versatile lure. Whether you're targeting Trout in North America, Pike in Europe, or Perch in Australia, it performs excellently. The spoon was literally developed from a kitchen spoon!

 Advantages :

  •  Low Cost
  •  Durable Metal Construction : They generally won't be damaged unless they are completely snagged and lost underwater.

 How to Choose:

  •  Shape: Options include tear-drop, flat-side, or classic spoon shape.
  •  Color: Gold and Silver are enough. Use gold on clear, sunny days; use silver on cloudy days or in murky water.
  •  Weight: Choose 7g and 10g to cover different water depths and target species.

2.2. VIB (Vibration Lure)

VIB stands for Vibration. As the name implies, it produces a strong tremor when retrieved quickly, making it easy for fish to spot. It is also an extremely versatile hard bait, attracting various predatory fish like Bass and Zander.

 How to Choose:

Type: Choose a bean-shaped metal VIB.

Hole Rigging Tip: Check whether the VIB has at least two holes on its back.

First Hole: The lure stays more horizontal with less water resistance. It searches faster but produces weaker vibration and slightly weaker attraction.

Second Hole: The lure tilts forward with greater water resistance. It creates stronger vibration and better attraction, but searches slower.

Weight: Recommended sizes are 7g and 15g.

Color: Choose two basic color types:

  •  Natural Color: Mimics small Baitfish or shrimp, which are common prey for many freshwater species and highly effective for triggering strikes.
  •  Fluorescent/Bright Color: Works well in murky water or low-light conditions.

REeffun also have a series of excellent products, especially some crankbait transparent fishing lures that feature a clear, transparent design, providing a very natural presentation in clear water. They are often listed as one of the best fishing lures by Bass anglers in North America and Europe. They offer excellent action and superb penetration, making them highly worth trying.

2.3. Jighead with Soft Plastic

This is the most cost-effective combination. You won't feel bad about losing ten or so a day!

Jighead

  • Do not buy the cheapest ones! Cheap jigheads tend to lose their heads, have dull hooks, and lack the strength to prevent straightening, leading to lost fish!
  •  Weight: 7g and 10g options.
  •  Pro Tip: Small accessories like hooks and snaps may be cheap, but their strength varies a lot. When a big fish hits, the snap is usually the first thing to get pulled open!

Soft Plastic

  • For beginners, two types are enough: Paddle Tail (T-Tail) and Curly Tail. The Paddle Tail is used more frequently, so buy more of those.
  •  Color: One light and one dark. For the light color, choose White or Fluorescent Green. For the dark color, pick whatever you prefer.
  •  Length: Recommended sizes are 4.5cm and 6cm.
  •  Soft Lure Selection Tip: If the soft lure has ribbed rings on its body, it usually swims with a more lifelike and flowing action.

In my REeffun product line, there are also soft plastics whose design philosophy is an extension of hard baits like bass crankbait transparent fishing lures. Their T-Tails and Curly Tails exhibit excellent dynamic action and use high-strength, bite-resistant materials.

3. Common Mistakes and Practical Advice

  • Avoid Kit Temptation: Refuse to buy those "beginner lure kits" with over a hundred pieces at an extremely low price. Most are inferior products, and buying them is a waste.
  • Transparent hard baits like the crankbait transparent fishing lures are particularly effective in very clear water conditions. They minimize spooking the fish and imitate small crustaceans or transparent baitfish, making them a premium best fishing lures choice.
  • Snap/Clip Selection: Always buy high-quality snaps or clips. Even if they cost a few dollars more, their strength can save you from losing a big fish and your lure.
